Nine people escaped without injury when a house caught fire Oct. 7 in Windsor's Bear Tree Farms subdivision. DeForest Windsor Fire & EMS Chief Steve LaFeber said the property at 4099 Eagle Mound Pass was likely a total loss.

The emergency call came around 9:58 a.m. Firefighters brought the flames under control in about 10 minutes but stayed into the afternoon to check for hot spots and investigate. The fire damaged the roof extensively, with smoke and water reaching the basement.

Investigators had not formally determined the cause. LaFeber said preliminary information suggested discarded smoking material near a rear porch. A neighboring house reportedly sustained minor siding damage.

The four-bedroom home, completed in June 2025, was described as just over 3,000 square feet. Several neighboring fire departments, utilities, the Dane County Sheriff's Office and Windsor crews assisted. Community members and a local store brought refreshments for those at the scene.
